Meanwhile, Calvert County picked up 1 run in the top of the second, 3 runs in the top of the fourth, and 1 more in the top of the fifth to hold a 5-2 lead after 5 innings. After Calvert County failed to score in the top of the sixth, Josh Smith doubled to start the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Andrew Dangin singled Josh to third. The right center fielder was slow to come in on the ball and then bobbled it too. Austin was hustling all the way on the play and scored from first to give Saint Nicholas the 6-5 win.

June 2 vs First Lutheran

This doubleheader with First Lutheran has to be one that goes down in the annals of Saint Nicholas softball history. Both games were highly competitive with comebacks on both sides, multiple lead changes, and, in the end, one run ball games. When the dust settled (or better said, right before the rains came!!), Saint Nicholas pulled out a 12-11 walk-off win in the first game followed by a thrilling 7-6 nine inning win in the second game. The two wins pushed Saint Nicholas's record to 4-2 on the season.

First Lutheran batted first in game one and wasted no time getting getting started scoring 2 runs in the top of the first. It would have been worse if not for shortstop Jerry Wood firing a perfect relay throw from left center fielder Austin Owens to catcher Tom Blatt to nail a runner at the plate. Saint Nicholas got 1 run back in the bottom of the first when Sean Smith smacked the team's fourth consecutive two-out single to score Josh Smith and cut Saint Nicholas's deficit to 2-1. Neither team scored in the second inning. First Lutheran picked up 3 runs in the top of the third to stretch their lead to 5-1. Jerry Wood led off the bottom of the third by reaching on an error. Sean Smith knocked in Jerry with another two-out single to make the score 5-2. First Lutheran did not score in the top of the fourth thanks to a double-play with the bases loaded executed by Josh Smith and Sean Smith. Tom Blatt reached base on an error with one out in the bottom of the fifth. One out later, Austin Owens, Jerry Wood, Josh Smith, and Keith Williams reached base consecutively, again all with two outs. Saint Nicholas picked up 4 runs in the inning and jumped into a 6-5 lead. Jerry Wood knocked in Tom to give Saint Nicholas the lead. One out later, Keith Williams knocked in Matt and Austin to give Saint Nicholas an 11-8 lead. Neither team scored in the sixth inning. First Lutheran mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh, scoring 3 runs to tie the game at 11-11. Austin Owens singled to start the bottom of the seventh. After Jerry Wood's screaming line drive was snagged by the third baseman for the first out, Josh Smith singled to right center. Austin Owens hustled around second and drew a throw to third base from the right fielder, who had already thrown out two Saint Nicholas runners earlier in the game. As Austin slid to the inside part of the base, the throw went to the outside part of the base and bounced past the third baseman. Austin got up and sprinted home to score the winning run. The final score - Saint Nicholas 12, First Lutheran 11.

Comparatively speaking, game two got off to a slow start. Neither team scored in the first inning. Saint Nicholas did not score in the top of the second inning. Matt Hickin's ground ball to second forced Tom out but scored Bryan to put Saint Nicholas back into the lead. Austin Owens followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Austin Wood from third and gave Saint Nicholas a 7-5 lead. First Lutheran scored once in the bottom of the ninth, but it was not enough. Saint Nicholas escaped with a 7-6 win.

Jerry Wood hit the ball hard all night, leading the team with 6 hits. He also had a walk and scored 4 runs. Austin Owens had 4 hits and also scored 4 runs. Tom Blatt also had 4 hits and scored 2 runs. Josh Smith scored 3 runs. Matt Hickin, Bryan Mullins, and Austin Wood all scored two runs. A very big statistic for the evening was that Saint Nicholas scored 8 runs with two outs during the doubleheader. Coming through in the clutch like that definitely made the difference between winning and losing.

May 6 vs Emmanuel Church

After the disappointing season opener versus Grace Brethren, Emmanuel Church was Saint Nicholas's next opponent. Saint Nicholas bounced back in grand style, sweeping the May 6 doubleheader from Emmanuel 21-6 and 13-6. The two wins moved Saint Nicholas's regular season record to 2-2. Jason Starks became the third player to make his Saint Nicholas softball debut this year. Unfortunately, the injury bug bit Jason (hamstring pull) and Sean Demme (got plunked hard in the ribs by an errant throw). Hopefully, both players will be completely healed soon.

Saint Nicholas got off to a good start in the first game when Dave Hickin, Jerry Wood, and Greg Bandelow scored in the top of the first to give Saint Nicholas a quick 3-0 lead. Emmanuel got a two-run homerun in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 3-2. Sean Demme and Jim Felbinger singled to start the top of the second. Dave Hickin tripled both of them home. After an out, Andrew Wood, Greg Bandelow, Sean Smith, Keith Williams, Jason Starks, and Matt Hickin reached base consecutively. Dave, Andrew, Greg, and Sean scored to give Saint Nicholas a 6-run second inning and a 9-2 lead. Emmanuel did not score in the bottom of the second inning nor did Saint Nicholas in the top of the third. Emmanuel did score 1 run in the bottom of the third to make the score 9-3. Saint Nicholas proceeded to send 14 batters to the plate in the top of the fourth, scoring 9 runs, and ballooned their lead to 18-3. Emmanuel got 1 run back in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 18-4. Matt Hickin walked and both Bryan Mullins and Sean Demme singled to start the top of the fifth. After a couple of Emmanuel errors, all three runners scored to increase Saint Nicholas's lead to 21-4. Emmanuel scored 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth. The game ended at that point, 21-6, because of the 10-run rule.

Emmanuel opened the second game scoring 1 run to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Dave Hickin doubled to start the bottom of the first. One out later, Andrew Wood and Greg Bandelow singled to score Dave. After a second out, Keith Williams's single scored Andrew and Greg and Saint Nicholas held a 3-1 lead. Emmanuel did not score in the top of the second. With Sean Demme and Dave Hickin on base with two out, Emmanuel made a crucial error on Jerry Wood's batted ball. After Andrew Wood walked and Greg Bandelow singled, Sean, Dave, and Jerry all scored to push Saint Nicholas's lead to 6-1. Emmanuel answered with 3 runs in the top of the third to cut the lead to 6-4. Four straight singles by Keith Williams, Jason Starks, Bryan Mullins, and Sean Demme to start the bottom of the third scored 2 runs. A fielder's choice by Jim Felbinger netted a third run increasing Saint Nicholas's lead to 9-4. Emmanuel did not score in the top of the fourth. Andrew Wood walked to start the bottom of the fourth. Greg Bandelow followed with a single, Sean Smith with a double, and then Keith Williams with a single. Andrew, Greg, and Sean scored to make the score 12-4 after four innings. April 29 vs Grace Brethren

Saint Nicholas's 2018 season did not get off to the start the team hoped for when they dropped both ends of the season opening doubleheader to Grace Brethren 15-7 and 14-5. Both games were similar in that they were tight games halfway through and then Saint Nicholas stopped scoring runs and Grace Brethren didn't. The doubleheader did see the Saint Nicholas softball debut for Devon Atcheson and Rick Watkins. Both played well. Unfortunately, Rick pulled a hamstring running to first base late in the first game and will be lost for at least a month while he waits for the muscle to heal.

In the first game, Saint Nicholas failed to score in the top of the first. Grace Brethren got a two-out solo homerun to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Josh Smith walked to start the top of the second inning. Rick Watkins and Devon Atcheson followed with singles to load the bases with nobody out. Nick Demme walked to force home Josh and tie the game. Dave Hickin and Matt Hickin also walked to score Rick and Devon. Sean Demme followed with an RBI single to score Nick and Bryan Mullins walked to force home Dave. Andrew Dangin's sacrifice fly scored Matt and gave Saint Nicholas a 6-1 lead at the end of the top of the second. Grace Brethren went three up, three down in the bottom of the second. Saint Nicholas did not score in the top of the third or fourth inning. Meanwhile, Grace Brethren picked up 2 runs in the bottom of the third and 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 6-6 after four innings. Josh Smith's sacrifice fly scored Andrew Dangin to give Saint Nicholas the lead back, 7-6. Grace Brethren responded with 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth to jump to a 11-7 lead. Saint Nicholas did not score in the sixth or seventh innings. Grace Brethren tacked on 4 more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score 15-7.

Grace Brethren jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a solo homerun. With Andrew Wood on first with two outs, Greg Bandelow singled. Then, Josh Smith launched a three-run homerun over the right center field fence to give Saint Nicholas a 3-1 lead after one inning. Neither team scored in the second inning. Grace Brethren scored 2 runs in the top of the third to tie the game at 3-3. Saint Nicholas did not score in the bottom of the third nor did Grace Brethren in the top of the fourth. With one out in the bottom of the fourth and Keith Williams and Devon Atcheson on base, Dave Hickin singled to right to score Keith and put Saint Nicholas back on top. Sean Smith singled to load the bases. One out later, Sean Demme singled to score Devon and give Saint Nicholas a 5-3 lead. The lead was short lived as Grace Brethren struck for 4 runs in the top of the fifth to take a 7-5 lead. Unfortunately, Saint Nicholas did not score for the rest of the game. Grace Brethren added 2 runs in the sixth and 5 more in the seventh. Final score - Grace Brethren 14, Saint Nicholas 5.
