June 8 vs First Lutheran

Sporting a 4-game winning streak, the Saint Nicholas softball team came up against its long-time rival, First Lutheran. The two teams have a 26 year history of playing close games. In recent years, Saint Nicholas has had a slight edge over First Lutheran. First Lutheran decided it was time to change that trend and did so with a 13-3, 18-13 doubleheader sweep over Saint Nicholas. The two losses dropped Saint Nicholas's record to 5-5 on the season.

In the first game, Saint Nicholas got off to a quick start in the top of the first inning. Tom Blatt led off with a line drive that the right center fielder missed a shoestring catch allowing Tom to reach third with a triple. He scored immediately when the shortstop made an error on Jerry Wood's groundball. Jerry made it to third on the play. One out later, Chad Mooney scored Jerry with a sacrifice fly and Saint Nicholas held a 2-0 lead. That lead did not last very long. First Lutheran struck for 6 runs in the bottom of the first to take a 6-2 lead. Saint Nicholas did not score in the second or third innings. Meanwhile, First Lutheran added 3 runs in the bottom of the second and 1 more in the bottom of the third to build a 10-2 lead.
